Rakuten is a free shopping portal that pays you back when you shop online at thousands of stores like Dick’s Sporting Goods, Sephora, Macy’s and Nike. Most people know it for cash back, but here’s the secret: you can swap that cash back for travel points. You can choose Amex Membership Rewards points or Bilt points, and both transfer to airline and hotel partners.
🔥 Step 1: Shop Dick’s Online Through Rakuten
- Sign up with my Rakuten link (it’s free!).
- Set how you get paid to Amex points or Bilt points (instructions below). Do this BEFORE you shop; your payment method only applies to future purchases.
- Search Dick’s Sporting Goods in Rakuten, activate the 15X offer, and click through to dickssportinggoods.com before you check out. This deal is for online orders only, so in-store purchases won’t count.

🧮 The Math: 6,600 Points on a $100 Order
Here’s what a $100 online order looks like if you’re new to Rakuten:

💰 All the Ways to Redeem Rakuten
Rakuten pays you every three months (quarterly), and you get to choose HOW you get paid. There are four options:
💵 Option 1 & 2: Cash (Check or PayPal)
- Big Fat Check: Rakuten mails a check to the address in your account.
- PayPal: Your cash back gets deposited straight into your PayPal account.
- You need at least $5.01 in confirmed cash back to get paid. Anything less rolls over to the next payment.
Cash is fine, but if you love to travel, this is where you’re leaving money on the table, bestie! 👀
💙 Option 3: Earn Amex Points
The math is super simple: 1% cash back = 1 Amex point per dollar. So 15% cash back means 15 Amex points per dollar.
- You MUST have an Amex card that earns Membership Rewards points (like the Amex Gold, Platinum, Green or Blue Business Plus). A cash-back Amex won’t work.
- You do NOT have to pay with your Amex at checkout. The card just has to be in your name so Rakuten can deposit the points.
- To switch, go to your Rakuten account settings, choose Membership Rewards points as your payment method and log in to Amex to link.
- Points post on Rakuten‘s quarterly payment schedule, so be patient!
🏠 Option 4: Earn Bilt Points
No Amex card? This is one of the best ways to earn points with no credit card required at all.
- Download the Bilt app (free to join).
- Link your Rakuten account inside the Bilt app. This step is required; you can’t set it up from Rakuten alone.
- Select Bilt Points as your Rakuten payment method.
- Shop through Rakuten like normal. Your Bilt points deposit automatically each quarter.
Your earning rate depends on your Bilt status tier:

⚠️ Quick note: “Blue” here means Bilt’s entry-level status tier, not the Bilt Blue credit card. Everyone starts at Blue status. Bilt’s cards can help you reach Silver faster for the better 1:1 rate.
🤔 So Which One Is BETTER?
Bestie take: If you’re Bilt Silver or higher, Bilt is amazing; points transfer to partners like Alaska Airlines Atmos Rewards, World of Hyatt and Air France/KLM. Still Blue status AND have an Amex Membership Rewards card? Amex usually gets you more.
That’s exactly why I use BOTH! I pick whichever program I need points in for my next trip. ✈️
💡 Switching tip: You can’t switch directly between Amex and Bilt. Change your payment method to PayPal or Big Fat Check first, then select the other points option.
🍽️ Rakuten Dining
Rakuten isn’t just for online shopping! Link a credit card in the Rakuten app, then pay with it at participating restaurants to earn 5% back automatically, on top of your credit card points. If you earn Amex points, that’s 5x Amex points per dollar!
- Add your card once in the app, then just dine and pay like normal. No coupons or receipts needed.
- Find participating restaurants under the In-Store section of the Rakuten app.
- If you’ve set Rakuten to Amex or Bilt points, your dining rewards come as points too (Bilt points convert at your status rate from the table above).
💡 Bestie tip: Dining programs usually don’t let you link the same card to more than one, so link a different card to Rakuten Dining and Rove Dining.
